Landscaping Ideas: Outdoor Fireplaces
A proper balance of the elements can make your outdoor living area an incredible place to spend your time. You've already got earth and air, now all you need is water and fire. The element of water can be easily integrated into an outdoor area using a birdbath, fountain or fish pond. When it comes to fire landscaping ideas, outdoor fireplaces fit the bill. There is nothing more luxurious or beautiful than an outdoor fireplace on a crisp night. The fire adds warmth, light and beauty to any outdoor location. Some fireplaces placed outdoors can even be used for cooking.
Stone is the most desirable material when it comes to the outdoor fireplace. You have two main choices -- natural stone or cultured stone. Natural stone is currently the most popular material for the outdoor fireplace. Limestone, granite, slate and marble are all examples of natural stone that can be used. Limestone is porous and beautiful, while granite is strong and classic. Slate is natural and smooth, while marble is the utmost in luxury and sophistication. No matter what kind of stone you choose for your outdoor fireplace, be sure to coat it with a weatherproofing sealant. This will prevent your stone fireplace from being damaged by rainwater or excessive sunlight.
As far as lighting the fireplace is concerned, you can use wood or choose a gas fireplace. While wood is the cheapest and most traditional material, gas is more environmentally friendly. The gas fireplace operates with propane while the wood burning fireplace uses wood and may release polluting carbon monoxide into the air. It is a matter of personal choice when selecting how you want your fireplace to operate. Some people love the fragrance and appearance of wood, while others like the clean burning properties of gas. You may want to do some research and compare the pros and cons of each choice before making a decision.
If you are looking for more landscaping ideas outdoor fireplaces go well with, think about making an entire area for lounging, entertaining and relaxing. Along with your fireplace you may plant a gorgeous container garden and install a flowing water fountain. Hanging wind chimes in the vicinity can make the area even more zen-like and tranquil. People are building outdoor living areas around their fireplaces that they use for barbecuing, relaxing and more.
