Rustic Landscaping Ideas for a Down Home Look

Rustic landscaping ideas can be used to give your outdoor area a charming, down home appearance. What do you think of when you consider the word rustic? Most people see natural wood and stone accented with warm, rich colors and lots of natural foliage. For example, you could try planting some oak trees, surrounded by a lovely reddish toned mulch. Flowers like fragrant honeysuckle and plentiful morning glory twining around some natural wood latticework gives any area a cottage feel. You can install lattice on the side of your porch, or try an arched awning made from lattice wood. Lattice is basically a checkered pattern of wood with spaces in between where twining vines can be trained to grow.

When choosing materials for your yard, think warm and natural. Cedar is an excellent mulch material as well as a great wood for building garden benches. If you don't have a lot of space but want to plant flowers, try some large whiskey barrels filled with potting soil and the flowers and plants of your choice. These large barrels are not just rustic but practical. They can hold a beautiful variety of flowers and foliage. The great thing about container gardening is versatility. Containers can be moved easily and placed wherever you need them to be.

A few wooden birdhouses and feeders can add a nature friendly touch to any rustic landscape. If you're an avid birdwatcher, hanging some birdhouses and feeders can bring your favorite songbirds to your yard so you can photograph and/or view them easily. Once they get used to your presence, you may be able to sit outdoors close to the feeder and watch them. Birds also need water, so consider a pretty birdbath for the area as well. You may even want to place a pretty copper and glass gazing ball in your garden as well. The shiny finish attracts birds and the gazing ball adds beauty and art to the garden.

Rustic landscaping ideas aren't just for woodsy, rural areas. You can bring the beauty and charm of a rural area to your suburban home with a few simple touches. For example, a wheelbarrow used as a planter is a great way to add rustic beauty to your yard. Simply fill the wheelbarrow with potting soil and plant your flowers as you normally would. There are plenty of creative ways to add a rustic look to most any outdoor area, no matter how large or small.
