Unique Landscaping Ideas for Your Backyard

Are you looking for something a bit out of the ordinary for your backyard? If so, there are lots of unique landscaping ideas for your backyard that can be used. Before you implement any ideas, you should first evaluate the area and figure out what will work best. You should consider the amount of space you have, whether it is sunny or shady, and what your individual goals are. Some people want lots of room for their garden while others want space to entertain and play. Of course, you can have it all if you arrange your space efficiently.

One unique idea for your backyard is the integration of the four elements. The four elements are better known as earth, air, water and fire. Eastern philosophy believes that a proper balance of these elements in the home and garden can add to the level of positive energy and make your home and garden a more pleasant place to be. There are lots of easy ways to do this. You've already got earth and air from the beginning. To add water, try installing a birdbath, fountain or water garden. To add fire, try garden torches, a fire pit or even an outdoor fireplace.

Another unique idea is to create a moon garden in your backyard. A moon garden is a fragrant collection of night blooming plants. If you entertain after dark in your backyard, this is an excellent addition. Night blooming jasmine and moonflowers are two examples of great additions to any moon garden. After the sun goes down, the petals of these flowers open and their heady fragrance is released. Gazing balls and of course fire in some form are more great additions to an after-dark garden area. A fire bowl, also known as a fire pit, is a gorgeous yet practical way to bring light and heat to your yard at night.

There are plenty more unique landscaping ideas that you can use. For example, decorative stone and glass in place of mulch is one of the newest yet trendiest ideas for garden areas. You need only browse through some landscaping books or search the Web to find a wide variety of great ideas for your backyard area. Often you can use an idea you've found in a book or online and modify it a bit to suit your individual landscaping needs.
