Waterfall Landscaping Ideas for Your Yard
![]() |
Water gardens are absolutely beautiful when done properly. Adding the element of water to your landscape can give it new life and beauty. One of the most attractive aspects of a water garden is the waterfall. There are plenty of waterfall landscaping ideas you can use to make the perfect water garden for your yard. First, you will need to figure out where you want your water garden and waterfall to be. Once you've designated the ideal location, it's time to find plans and start preparing for your new waterfall and pond.
One of the easiest ways to construct a waterfall, if you don't already have the proper elevation, is with large rocks. You can actually create a homemade waterfall by stacking and positioning large rocks in the right way. You will also need a small pond and a pump that circulates the water from the pond to the top of the waterfall so that it can trickle back down into the pond. It's very similar to how a desk or garden water fountain works. You will need some supplies to build your waterfall.
Supplies required to construct a homemade waterfall in your yard include the rocks, submersible pump, tubing which is run from the water to the top of the falls, a large flower pot which provides a home for the tubing, a pond liner, a carpenter's level, sand, a garden hose and a shovel. Once you have these basic supplies, you are ready to make your very own outdoor waterfall. Before starting to dig the area for your waterfall and/or water garden, you should contact your local water and power company to make sure there are no buried lines under the ground.
There are quite a few books that can give you a great deal of waterfall landscaping ideas. Most of these books contain colorful photographs and detailed plans that can help you construct your waterfall from start to finish. Check out the Complete Guide to Water Gardens: Ponds, Fountains, Waterfalls and Streams by Kathleen Fisher. A couple other good titles about water gardens include How to Build Ponds and Waterfalls by Jeffrey Reid and The Master Book of the Water Garden by Phillip Swindells. These books represent a small fraction of the titles out there about building water gardens and waterfalls on your property.
